Mindful and Compassionate Pediatric Sleep Consulting
Build your family’s strong, healthy and happy foundation from sleep up…
What is Sleep Training?
At a glance, sleep training is the process used to achieve better, more consistent, and developmentally appropriate sleep. Pediatric sleep consulting focuses on your baby’s developmental sleep needs and how best to meet them. But the process ultimately improves the whole family’s sleep.
Oftentimes, parents come in with specific goals in mind for their child’s sleep, such as sleeping through the night, helping their baby establish independent sleep habits, transitioning from co-sleeping to independent sleeping and more, or simply wanting to understand their baby’s developmental process in relation to sleep so they can be prepared to meet each new stage as it comes.
My approach to sleep consulting is grounded in three basic principles:
1. Research Based
At its base, pediatric sleep consulting is grounded in the most up to date research not only on sleep, but specifically on infant sleep and infant development, as well as research based sleep coaching techniques.
Intuitively, we all know we need sleep. But our sleep needs and the ways we achieve sleep vary by individual and change as we grow, and it can be difficult to know how to meet these changing needs…especially when we are sleep deprived ourselves.
In the sleep consulting process, you will gain a baseline understanding of what sleep is, it’s different stages, how these stages change throughout your baby’s development, and how to support your little one (and whole family! including you!) to have the best sleep they can.
2. Tailored to You
There are a wide variety of sleep training methods to help you, your family and your little one reach your specific sleep goals, the way that feels good for you.
Oftentimes parents come to sleep training, desperate for help with their baby’s (and their own..) sleep, but with one fixed idea about what sleep training is. One fixed idea that maybe doesn’t feel right for them…
I have been trained in a wide variety of sleep training approaches. All of which are grounded in research, all shown to be safe and effective in developing independent, healthy, developmentally appropriate sleep habits. The reality is, different approaches work for different people and different situations. In the sleep consulting process, I will get to know you, your baby, and your unique family situation, and find then create a unique sleep plan that is specially designed to support your situation and needs.
3. Mindful, Compassionate, and Trusting.
Whether this is your first baby, or you are growing your family, bringing a new human into the world is a uniquely exciting yet vulnerable time.
If you are a new parent, you may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious and unsure of what to do and how to best care for this wonderful little person who has entered your world. Or perhaps you have been surprised by how different your newest little one is from their older siblings, and finding your previous methods don’t work to support their needs in the same way.
Regardless of your situation, we all have moments of uncertainty and we all need support in times of transition. Having a baby is constant newness and transition, and adding sleep deprivation to the mix can be overwhelming, to say the least.
My approach brings mindful awareness to the preciousness and rawness of this time in your life, endless compassion for the process, and perhaps most importantly, trust in the process. Our fears, anxiety and doubts are most active when we are learning something new and sleep deprived (read: parenthood). Its ok! Both you and your baby are capable of getting better sleep and it will get better!
About Me
My name is Rae Schultz, and I am a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant. As a sleep consultant, I want to support you and your baby to get the sleep and rest you need and deserve. My philosophy is grounded in the belief that the proper knowledge, tools and support are what you and your baby need to build the foundation for your entire life to come. And I truly believe that healthy sleep is the foundation that builds stronger, healthier, and happier babies, parents, families and communities.
I bring a mindful, non-judgmental and compassionate approach, and I am here to apply my expertise to support and empower you in what feels best for you and your family.
I first learned about sleep consulting when my brother and his wife (pictured to the right) went through the process for their little one, and loveddd it. With 10+ years of experience working with children and families in education and mental health services, it immediately clicked that this was an amazing way to support the health and well-being of little ones and their families, from the ground up.
