Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to start sleep training?
While a lot of work and learning can be done in the newborn phase to develop healthy sleep foundations, sleep training experts generally agree that the best time to start sleep training is between 4-6 months of age, as this is when babies start to develop regular sleep habits. After this age, the sooner you start sleep training, the easier it will be for your baby to learn and develop independent sleep habits. However, don’t be discouraged if you’ve missed this early window. Sleep training, at any stage, requires dedication and patience, and, with the proper approach, it is completely possible to teach your little one healthy, independent sleep habits at any point in their development.
Is my baby ready for sleep training?
You will start to notice a few key signs when your baby is developmentally ready to begin sleep training (typically around 4-6 months, as mentioned above).
One of the first things parents often notice is the predictable patterns in their baby’s sleep. This might look like your baby waking up at the same time each morning or becoming sleepy at consistent times or after certain activities (such as after the same daily feeding). This shows your baby is beginning to align with the natural cycles of day and night, and is an excellent indicator for beginning to establish independent sleep. Your baby will also naturally start to need fewer night feedings around this stage, as their tummies grow and they are able to eat more and therefore go longer without feeding again.
Another key developmental milestone you may notice your baby demonstrating is the ability to self soothe. Self-soothing may show up as finger sucking, reaching for something to comfort them (other than a parent or caregiver), self-rocking or babbling. These are all healthy ways your baby is learning to regulate their own nervous system and sleep cycle.
If your baby is showing regular alertness during the day, this is also an excellent indicator that they are ready for sleep training. Being fully awake during the day shows your baby is getting adequate rest and can develop healthy sleep windows and habits.
It is important to remember that the sleep training process will help your baby develop all of these skills and behaviors. If your baby is the appropriate age and isn’t showing these cues, don’t be discouraged! With the proper assessment and support, your baby will absolutely learn to develop healthy sleep patterns.
My baby splits time between multiple homes, can I still do sleep training?
Absolutely. In fact, sleep training can be especially effective and important for little ones who are transitioning between homes or receive care from multiple caregivers. Your baby’s brain is taking in and processing huge amounts of information every day. Sometimes, adding extra external factors, such as switching homes or caregivers, can be confusing or overwhelming for them. However, don’t be discouraged! With the proper support and implementation of a sleep plan adapted for your situation, your baby can absolutely develop healthy and consistent sleep, regardless of where they are.
Can I still do sleep training if I share a room with my baby?
Definitely! Lots of parents and caregivers share a room with their baby. In fact, it is generally encouraged for parents to share a room (but not a bed, see more in the ‘essentials’ section) for around the first 6 months. Whether you are sharing a room with your baby out of necessity or choice, sleep training is absolutely still possible, and will help improve sleep for baby and caregivers alike.
